Exercise 3p. 12 Read the text again and complete the notes about the effects of water pollution. Fill each blank with no more than three words. Water pollution means one or more substances have built up in water to such an extent that they cause problems for animals or people. There are also two different ways in which pollution can occur. If pollution comes from a single location, such as industrial waste into lakes and rivers, sewage from households, pesticides and herbicides, it is known as point-source pollution. While pollutants from storm water and the atmosphere result in "non-point source" pollution. Water pollution can outbreak of cholera and other diseases, even die in human. It also causes the death of aquatic animals and plants and further damage to the environment. Dealing with water pollution is something that everyone needs to do. With the laws, governments have very strict laws that help minimize water pollution. Making people aware of the problem is the first step to solving it. 5

Air pollution: Definition: Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes or odour in harmful amounts Cause: industrial watse, exhaust from car and plane... Effect: causing diseases, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, or the natural or built environment. 6
  7. 4. Imagine that you two are writing an article for the local newspaper about a type of pollution in your area. One of you writes about the causes and the other writes about the effects of the pollution type you have just discussed in 3. Cause: pesticides, herbicides, chemical industrial watse, deforestation... Effect: soil pollution, the upper layer of soil is damaged, effect on wild-life... Solutions: Fine heavily people who cut the forest and those who realease chemicals waste into the ground. 5.Read each other's work an put them together to make a complete article. (Đọc bài của mỗi người và đặt chúng cùng nhau để làm bài hoàn chỉnh.) SOIL POLLUTION Soil pollution happens when human activities destroy the earth’s surface. There are many causes leading to soil pollution. Pesticides, herbicides, chemical industrial watse, deforestation,... all are causes that make the soil polluted. The consequences are that: the soil is erosed, the upper layer of soil is damaged, and the homes for wild ainmals may disappear forever. So what we can do to resolve the problems? The goverment should fine heavily people who cut the forest and those who realease chemicals waste into the ground. Besides, we should educate people about the importance of soil and how to protect land when farming. Bài tham khảo thêm The sample article: WATER POLLUTION There are several types of pollution. However, water pollution is the most serious in our area. It is caused by several factors. Firstly, families dump sewage into the river. In the past it was a very beautiful river, but now the water is almost black. Secondly, there are two new factories in our area, and they are dumping chemical waste into the lake and river. Thirdly, pesticides are another source of pollution. Farmers in our area usually use these to kill insects. Water pollution badly affects our area. We do not have enough fresh water to water the plants and crops. People cannot raise fish in the river and the lake because the water there is so polluted. In addition, there are no more wild ducks near the river today since they cannot find fish for food. Another negative effect is that sometimes in the afternoon there is a bad smell from the polluted river, so people do not like walking along it 7
  8. anymore. People in our area are all aware of this problem, and we are thinking of some ways to solve it. 8
