Line 1. naturally → natural Line 1 As we feel tired at bedtime, it is naturally to assume that we sleep because we are tired. 2 The point seems too obvious that hardly anyone has ever sought to question it. 3 Nevertheless, we must ask “tired of what?” People certainly feel tired in the end of a hard 4 day’s manual work, but it is also true that office workers feel equally tired when bedtime 5 come. Even invalids, confining to beds or wheelchairs, become tired as the evening wears 6 on. However, manual workers still feel tired even after an evening spent relaxing in front 7 of the television or reading a book, activities which ought to have a refreshing effect. There 8 is no proof connection between physical exertion and the need for sleep. People want to sleep, 9 however little exercise they have done. Nor is the desire for sleep related to mental fatigues. 10 In fact, sleep comes less slowly to people who have had an intellectual stimulating day, 11 just because their minds are still full of thoughts when they retire. Ironically, one way of 12 sending someone to sleep is to put him or her into a boring situation which the intellectual 13 effort is minimal. Page 2 of 6

(5 pts) The stylistic innovation in painting known as Impressionism began in the 1870s. The Impressionists wanted to depict what they saw in nature, but they were inspired to portray fragmentary moments by the increasingly fast pace of modern life. They concentrated on the play of light over objects, people, and nature, breaking up seemingly solid surfaces, stressing vivid contrast between colors in sunlight and shade, and depiction reflected light in all of its possibilities. Unlike earlier artists, they did not want to observe the world from indoors. They abandoned the studio, painting in the open air and recording spontaneous impressions of their subjects instead of making outside sketches and then moving indoors to complete the work from memory. Impressionism acquired its name not from supporters but from angry art lovers who felt threatened by the new painting. The term “Impressionism” was born in 1874, when a group of artists who had been working together organized an exhibition of their paintings in order to draw public attention to their work. Reaction from the public and press was immediate, and derisive. Among the 165 paintings exhibited was one called Impression: Sunrise, by Claude Monet (1840 – 1926), viewed through hostile eyes, Monet's painting of a rising sun over a misty, watery scene seemed messy, slapdash, and an affront to good taste. Borrowing Monet's title, art critics extended the term “Impressionism” to the entire exhibition. In response, Monet and his 29 fellow artists in the exhibition adopted the same name as a badge of their unity, despite individual differences. From then until 1886, Impressionism had all the zeal of a “church”, as the painter Renoir put it. Monet was faithful to the Impressionist creed until his death, although many of the others moved on to new styles. 31. What aspect of painting in the nineteenth century does the passage mainly discuss? A. A group of artists with a new technique and approach to art B. The word “depict” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _____. A. represent B. reorganize C. deform D. justify 33. According to the passage, which of these was one of the distinguishing characteristics of Impressionist painting? A. The way the subjects were presented from multiple angles B. The focus on small solid objects C. The emphasis on people rather than nature scenes D. The depiction of the effects of light and color 34. Which of these is a significant way in which Impressionists were different from the artists that preceded them? A. They painted their subjects out of doors. B. They used subjects drawn from modern life. C. They began by making sketches of their subjects. D. They preferred to paint from memory. 35. 6. III. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 45. Write your answers (A, B, C, or D) on the answer sheet. (10 pts) According to sociologists, there are several different ways in which a person may become recognized as the leader of a social group in the United States. In the family, traditional cultural patterns confer leadership on one or both of the parents. In other cases, such as friendship groups, one or more persons may gradually emerge as leaders, although there is no formal process of selection. In larger groups, leaders are usually chosen formally through election or recruitment. Although leaders are often thought to be people with unusual personal ability, decades of research have failed to produce consistent evidence that there is any category of “natural leaders”. It seems that there is no set of personal qualities that all leaders have in common; rather, virtually any person may be recognized as a leader if the person has qualities that meet the needs of that particular group. Furthermore, although it is commonly supposed that social groups have a single leader, research suggests that there are typically two different leadership roles that are held by different individuals. Instrumental leadership emphasizes the completion of tasks by a social group. Group members look to instrumental leaders to get things done. Expressive leadership, on the other hand, emphasizes the collective well-being of a social group’s members. Expressive leaders are less concerned with the overall goals of the group than with providing emotional support to group members and attempting to minimize tension and conflict among them. Group members expect expressive leaders to maintain stable relationships within the group and provide support to individual members. Instrumental leaders are likely to have a rather secondary relationship to other group members. They give orders and may discipline group members who inhibit attainment of the group’s goals. Expressive leaders cultivate a more personal or primary relationship to others in the group. They offer sympathy when someone experiences difficulties or is subjected to discipline, are quick to lighten a serious moment with humor, and try to resolve issues that threaten to divide the group. As the differences in these two roles suggest, expressive leaders generally receive more personal affection from group members; instrumental leaders, if they are successful in promoting group goals, may enjoy a more distant respect. 36. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The problems faced by leaders B. The relationship between leaders of social groups C. How social groups determine who will lead them D. The roles of leaders in social groups 37. The passage mentions all of the following ways by which people can become leaders EXCEPT ______. A. recruitment B. formal election process C. specific leadership training D. traditional cultural patterns 38. In mentioning “natural leaders” in paragraph 2, the author is making the point that ______. A. few people qualify as “natural leaders” B. there is no proof that “natural leaders” exist C. “natural leaders” are easily accepted by the members of a social group D. “natural leaders” share a similar set of characteristics 39. Which of the following statements about leadership can be inferred from paragraph 2? A. A person who is an effective leader of a particular group may not be an effective leader in another group. B. Few people succeed in sharing a leadership role with another person. C. A person can best learn how to be an effective leader by doing research on leadership. D. Most people desire to be leaders but can produce little evidence of their qualifications. 40. The passage indicates that instrumental leaders generally focus on ______. A. ensuring harmonious relationships B. sharing responsibility with group members C. identifying new leaders D. achieving a goal 41.
